Book readings with music celebrating the publication of the 3rd edition of Daniel Deardorff’s classic book, The Other Within: The Genius of Deformity in Myth, Culture and Psyche took place on the Pacific Coast, in New England, and NYC in 2023. The series launched on Earth Day Weekend at Dandelion Botanical Company in Sequim, WA.
Judith-Kate Friedman, award-winning composer, vocalist, Steward of the Mythsinger Legacy Project, and Deardorff’s life partner from 2006 until his passing in 2019, read from the book and sang original songs, accompanied by Peter T Hutter, saxophone. Subsequent events took place at: Parable Books, Tacoma, WA; Port Townsend Library’s Charles Pink House with special guest Matt Sircely, mandolin; Last Word Books, Olympia, WA; Kingfisher Books, Coupeville, WA; Phoenix Rising, Port Townsend, with special guests Ash Devine, vocals, and Joe Breskin, guitar: The Conference on the Great Mother and the New Father, Nobleboro, ME; Memorial Day Gathering, Gouldsboro, ME; Owl and Turtle Books, Camden, ME; Muddy Angel Studio Concert and Reading with composer/pianist/vocalist Mark Kelso, Richmond, MA; Chateau Le Woof with mythteller Audrey di Mola, Astoria, Queens, NYC; House Concert Celebration, Oakland, CA: Sukkah Concert and Reading, Havurah Shir Hadash, Ashland, OR.
Each event matched two or three of the book’s many themes to the vision of the host bookseller and their community. These themes included: otherness, belonging, severance from and honoring of the earth, re-connecting with the wild, and how myth can guide us to living wholeheartedly in uncertain times. Discussion and book signings followed.
